Mad Max Forest Chase
We have decided to use this scene from the film Mad Max as it uses the idea of a chase scene as somebody runs through the woods, similar to the one which we are using for one of our scenes, in the sense that it is set in a similar location and it looks to create an effect towards the audience that disorientates them and so makes them curious as to exactly what is happening, and this is similar to what we will be aiming to create. From this scene, it has been particularly interesting for us to note the way that certain shots such as the tracking shots, such as the one at 0:44 in the video below, that pass behind trees in order to build a sense of mystery with regards to the action that's taking place.
TThe Butterfly Effect
We have been looking at The Butterfly Effect as it is an example of a film that uses a similar back-story in the sense that the character in both The Butterfly Effect and in our film are reflecting on past memories and are setting about trying to change them. Because of this, we are able to understand that some of the techniques used in The Butterfly Effect, such as the message relating to the man's past at 0:30 which we are likely to including in the form of items that are metaphorical for the female character in our film's memories and facial expressions shown to illustrate the character's distress at moving back into the past such as the ones shown from 0:45-1:05 in the trailer linked below, could be transferable over to our short film.
Alice In Wonderland
In Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, there is a scene in which Alice walks into a forest and is taking time to take in her new surroundings. The way in which the film has done this, through not over-using the camera and utilising the mobility of the actress, is something that we can look to use as an inspiration as we look on to shoot a scene opening in a similar manner. The shot in which which is being referred to can be seen in the below video at 0:40.
Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire
We have decided to use Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire because it shows an example of a cut being using between a close of people's feet that are running, and then it cuts to an eyeline match of the same action. After seeing it used in the Harry Potter movie, we are now considering using similar shots during a part of our short film when our character is running through the forest, as it has been used successfully in Harry Potter and so if we can produce something similar then it should be able to generate a similar effect of panic and frenzy for us. We wanted to upload the actual scene but due to copy right issues we have taken still shots from the movie instead.
Foo Fighters - Everlong
In the music video to the song Everlong by the Foo Fighters, there is a colour contrast used in order to show a change between reality and dreaming. As a result of consuming this media, we are going to look to take an interpretation of this and apply it to our short film. To do this, we are considering the possibility of using greyscale at certain points in our film in order to make it easy to distinguish between the reality of the film and the part of the film in which she is in the past, confronting her memories.
The Wanted
As well as using professionally created films as inspiration, we have also looked at past student productions and in particular this short film entitled The Wanted. At 3:16 in this clip, there is a tracking shot used which establishes the character within her environment, and this is something we could use for an effect of stability of the character in their new location, which will make the instability we create later on in the scene to have a greater consequence in terms of a reaction from our audience. However one thing we'll be careful of is ensuring that the level of the shot is maintained, as in this clip it can be seen that the character's face goes partly out of shot and so we can identify this as an error that we would want to avoid.
Donnie Darko - Hypnosis Scene
Our film involves Faye being hypnotised, and as nobody in our group has experienced hypnotism this clip is a useful reference for us. It shows how the hypnotist and the patient could react, and the composition of the shots of Donnie on the couch is similar to some of the shots we plan to use. This scene doesn't show any dialogue from the hypnotist whilst they are doing the 'procedure' whereas in our film we are going to have dialogue (without actually showing the hypnotist) to start the narrative and explain where Faye is and why.
Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring
The trombone shot at the start of this clip is a technique which we want to use when Faye sees the teddy in the distance in the woods, as it creates an eerie atmosphere and adds to the sense of confusion and unease we want to create in our film. Using this shot type will allow us to try different techniques with the camera. We've decided to use the trombone shot when the teddy is seen in the distance because it will also emphasise on the objects importance and make the perspective of the teddy look larger.
Kasabian - Empire
We are using this viedo as research because it contains a very strong pull focus shot at 3:37, which is a technique which we want to use in our film when Faye sees the windchimes in the woods - it is an over-shoulder shot and the focus will start on her shoulder then pull to the windchimes in a tree.
Glitch (Student Film)
We had the idea to add very quick glimpses of a close up of Faye's face throughout the montage, which will make it more creepy and intense. This student film uses a similar technique - there are flashes of light throughout, and at the end there are quick flashes of the different events which makes it very eerie.
Inception & Sucker Punch
Both narratives of the these films follow a fantasy/horror genre. The theme follows the form of being inside your mind and changing reality by doing so. The narrative for our film sees the protagonist faces her fears by being hypnotised and managing her memory through her mind and imagination. Inception and Sucker Punch both use layers of consciousness and we use this idea with going deeper into Faye's mind.
